We are trying to get Jane in to a clinical study in UCSF. We got an appointment with Dr. Melisko, she lives and breaths this type of cancer. The appointment is scheduled for Monday and we will be back by Tuesday.
The doctor will meet with the Nuro-onco Board on Thursday to present Jane’s case. The board will make a recommendation as to whether Jane should be given SRS, the chemo study or some other treatment. The doctor will meet with us on Monday to go over the recommendations of the board. If it is determined that the chemo study is the best course of action Jane will need to be in proximity of the study. That means that she will need to be in S.F. We are not sure how long it will take, it could be months.
Irinotecan and temozolomide, from my limited understanding, this dynamic duo is a cancer cocktail designed to stop and kill cancer growth in the brain. Temozolomide is a pill form of chemo that is taken twice a day during the cycle. It’s primary purpose to treat brain tumors. Irinotecan is given through IV and takes about 90 Minutes to infuse. This drug is primarily used to treat colon cancer, but has also been found to be effective in the brain. From my perspective the use of these two drugs is good because they are not experimental drugs. Both have been used to treat cancer and been somewhat effective. This purpose of this study is to use the drugs in tandem to see how effectively and safe they can be used together. On the down side both drugs have a full host of side effects ranging from mild to extremely nasty.
(Disclaimer: I know virtually nothing about this, but the little bit of reading I have done thus far. I’m sure I will get better understanding as we move forward and meet with the doctor. This information is to keep you informed and to help us know better how to pray for Jane.)
SRS or Stereotactic radiosurgery is the other option that is being looked at. While some facilities in Hawaii offer this type of procedure, it is not done on multiple mets like Jane’s. SRS is a precise radiologic procedure where radiation is focused directly on the place where the mets (mets is short for metastases, it means cancer that has spread, so mets are spots of cancer) are located.
I know I probably don’t need to say much, but….Pray for Jane’s 100% complete healing (press in, pray hard and contend!) Jane’s attitude and heart have been strong, please pray that they stay positive. Pray for the boys, I can tell they are a little worried, with good reason. Pray for me as I am feeling the weight of the situation and all the transition that will be necessary over the next few months. Pray for Jane’s sister, primary researcher and planner. She has been a great blessing as she has researched a ton (I mean a full ton) of information. She can talk to the doctor at a level that leaves most of us spinning, which makes her able to ask the right questions and even make suggestions. Remember to pray for Dr. Miyashiro and now Dr. Melisko the doctor in charge of the study. Pray for our living arrangements during this period. It will require a lot of coordination to manage life with the boys, work and especially separation for Jane. It will be hard enough having for her to go through treatment, but the harder thing will be that our family and our support network is primarily here in Hawaii.
Most of all, thanks for your support!!
